AUSANGATE Trek in 5 Days

The Ausangate trek is one of the most spectacular and challenging routes in the Peruvian Andes. It surrounds the imposing Nevado Ausangate (6,384 m) and offers landscapes of snow-capped mountains, colorful lagoons, glaciers and local communities. Here is a typical itinerary:

TREK ITINERARY

Day 1:

Cusco – Tinki – Upis

• Early departure from Cusco to the town of Tinki (3,800 m) by private transport.

• Start of the trek to Upis (4,400 m), enjoying views of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain.

• Relaxation in the Upis hot springs (optional).

• Camp in Upis with views of the snow-capped mountain.

• Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles).

• Duration: 5–6 hours

Day 2:

Upis – Arapa Pass – Pucacocha

• Ascent to the Arapa Pass (4,850 m), the first of the trek, with landscapes of glaciers and mountains.

• Descent to the Yanacocha, Pucacocha and Hatun Pucacocha lagoons, where you camp.

• Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles).

• Duration: 6–7 hours.

Day 3:

Pucacocha – Palomani Pass – Pampacancha

• Climb to the highest point of the trek, Palomani Pass (5,100 m), with spectacular views.

• Descent to the Pampacancha Valley (4,300 m), where you camp.

• Distance: 13 km (8 miles).

• Duration: 7–8 hours.

Day 4:

Pampacancha – Q’ampa Pass – Pacchanta

• Hike to Q’ampa Pass (5,000 m), the last high pass of the trek.

• Descent to Pacchanta (4,100 m), known for its hot springs.

• Camp at Pacchanta.

• Distance: 16 km (10 miles).

• Duration: 6–7 hours.

Day 5:

Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco

• Final hike from Pacchanta to Tinki, where private transportation will take you back to Cusco.

• Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles).

• Duration: 4–5 hours.
